A Grape Escape Balloon Adventure
Wine Country · 60-75 min flights
Family-owned sunrise flights over the vineyards, ending with a champagne or cider toast.
Sunrise balloon flights, 9,000 protected acres, and two lakes within twenty minutes.
By Heath Clendenning

The postcard version of Temecula outdoors is a hot air balloon drifting over the vines at sunrise, and the postcard is accurate: operators fly most clear mornings, year-round. But the quieter story is the land itself. The Santa Rosa Plateau protects 9,000 acres of oak woodland and vernal pools above Murrieta, Lake Skinner and Vail Lake hold the water, and the trails range from stroller-flat lake loops to a 3,400-foot wilderness climb. Booking links below go straight to each operator.
Sunrise belongs to the balloons; book the night before and you'll be airborne with a champagne toast by nine. The cooler months belong to the Santa Rosa Plateau, where the vernal pools fill after winter rain and the Engelmann oaks do their best savanna impression. Summer belongs to the lakes: kayak rentals at Skinner, bass fishing at Vail, and the duck pond for everyone under five.
Two of the best ways through the vineyards don't involve driving: guided horseback rides along De Portola, and e-bikes with curated winery routes. Both turn tasting day into the actual adventure rather than the thing between drives.

For most people, the Santa Rosa Plateau's loop trails are the valley's best walking: 40 miles of oak woodland and vernal pool country. For a serious climb, Dripping Springs gains about 3,400 feet into the Agua Tibia Wilderness.
At sunrise, year-round, weather permitting. Operators confirm the night before based on wind; if a flight cancels, reputable companies rebook or refund.
The Santa Rosa Plateau charges a small per-person trailhead fee, and Dripping Springs requires a National Forest Adventure Pass. Most city parks and lake loops are free.
