Temecula Valley Guide

The Outdoors: Balloons, Trails & Lakes

Sunrise balloon flights, 9,000 protected acres, and two lakes within twenty minutes.

By Heath Clendenning

A hot air balloon over the Temecula Valley

The postcard version of Temecula outdoors is a hot air balloon drifting over the vines at sunrise, and the postcard is accurate: operators fly most clear mornings, year-round. But the quieter story is the land itself. The Santa Rosa Plateau protects 9,000 acres of oak woodland and vernal pools above Murrieta, Lake Skinner and Vail Lake hold the water, and the trails range from stroller-flat lake loops to a 3,400-foot wilderness climb. Booking links below go straight to each operator.

The hierarchy of Temecula mornings

Sunrise belongs to the balloons; book the night before and you'll be airborne with a champagne toast by nine. The cooler months belong to the Santa Rosa Plateau, where the vernal pools fill after winter rain and the Engelmann oaks do their best savanna impression. Summer belongs to the lakes: kayak rentals at Skinner, bass fishing at Vail, and the duck pond for everyone under five.

  • Balloon flights: year-round, weather permitting, sunrise launches.
  • Santa Rosa Plateau: 40 miles of trails, best November through May.
  • Lake Skinner: kayaks, fishing boats, and camping; no swimming (it's a reservoir).
  • Dripping Springs: the serious hike, 3,400 feet up into the Agua Tibia Wilderness.

Wine country without a car

Two of the best ways through the vineyards don't involve driving: guided horseback rides along De Portola, and e-bikes with curated winery routes. Both turn tasting day into the actual adventure rather than the thing between drives.

Sunrise, 2,000 feet up

The valley looks different from a basket.

Balloons launch over the vineyards most clear mornings of the year. It's the single most Temecula thing you can do, and it books online in about two minutes.
